Moto Shop in San Fransisco has been an ongoing inspiration for Rising Sun Workshop from its conception (pre-crowd funding campaign) and now as they expand from their already successful Bay Area shop, adding Silicon Valley and Chicago into the fold. Their expansion prompting a new name symbolic of the expanding knowledge base they've fostered amongst riders... Moto Shop is now Moto Guild.
Aleks and Wilder Grippo are the husband-wife team behind Moto Guild and have been keen supporters of RSW, pledging their support during our crowd funding campaign and dropping messages of encouragement along the way.
When I interviewed Aleks to learn more of her personal story (and to finally meet) she was again generous with her advice and walked me (via her laptop camera) through their workshop. From what I could see this workshop was D-I-Y heaven on earth! Organised, full of a diverse range of motorcycles, people casually working together. After seeing the friendships forged through our pop-up space, I knew what I saw was palpable and strengthening to any community.
Aleks shared a story, I think to cheer me up at the time, about their own neighbourhood. Their neighbours include a chapel, a brewery and plenty of residents however, when locals got wind of the news that the building with the "bike shop" was being converted into condo's by developers, locals complained, preferring their local D-I-Y bike shop over development! This story indeed, did cheer me up, as it was a time where we had emerged out of the bureaucratic process here, which (despite my own resolve) did leave me lacking enthusiasm for the road ahead.
Congratulations to Aleks and Wilder of their continued success from all of us here in Sydney. The community you've created by being genuine, honest and generous sets a positive precedent for us newbies trying to make a start at it.
